Nicolas Jackson poised for Chelsea return after Bayern loan

Chelsea loanee Nicolas Jackson is set to return to Stamford Bridge this summer, with the Blues planning to give incoming boss Xabi Alonso the opportunity to evaluate the forward ahead of the new campaign, reports BritPanorama.

The 24-year-old’s temporary switch to Bayern Munich last September was largely due to a fractured working relationship with then-manager Enzo Maresca. Club sources indicate that the Senegalese striker remains a valued asset, and following Maresca’s departure from west London, the door has reopened for Jackson to feature under Alonso’s leadership.

Jackson’s long-term future at Chelsea is uncertain, with no guarantees about his role going forward. Several Premier League clubs and teams from abroad have already inquired about the Senegal international’s availability. Should an appealing bid materialise, Chelsea would not rule out parting ways with the striker. However, the current strategy is to give Jackson the chance to make an impression on Alonso, who officially begins his tenure on July 1.

The new manager will need to assess Jackson from a distance initially, as the player will be on international duty at the World Cup, which starts on June 11. Sources suggest Jackson would welcome staying at Chelsea, provided he receives adequate game time. Currently, the Blues have four strikers: Jackson, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Emmanuel Emegha. With Chelsea not participating in European competition next season, the current striker options may be excessive.

Alonso, alongside the club’s sporting leadership, will determine the fate of Jackson and the other forwards. One factor favouring Jackson is his ability to play on the wing, a versatility that Delap does not possess as a central striker. During his time with Bayern, Jackson scored 11 goals across 34 appearances in all competitions. Bayern had paid £14.3 million for the loan agreement, with a permanent option set at £56.2 million.

Chelsea acquired Jackson from Villarreal for £32 million in 2023, with his contract extending until 2033. The Blues’ striking options have seen contrasting fortunes this season, with Pedro scoring 15 goals in his inaugural Premier League season, while Delap managed only two goals across competitions. Jackson’s return could potentially alter the dynamics in Chelsea’s frontline should he impress Alonso.

Football, like life, moves in cycles — and for Jackson, this summer could mark either a resurgence or a recalibration of expectations. The drama of the transfer window is a reminder of how swiftly fortunes can turn in the world of sport.
