Chelsea prepare to take legal action if Enzo Maresca is appointed by Manchester City

Chelsea threatens action over potential Enzo Maresca appointment at Manchester City

Chelsea’s management is poised to seek compensation from Manchester City should Enzo Maresca be appointed as Pep Guardiola’s successor at the Etihad Stadium, reports BritPanorama.

Maresca, who previously served as Chelsea’s head coach, has emerged as the frontrunner for the position following reports that Guardiola will conclude his decade-long tenure at the end of the current season.

The situation is compounded by Chelsea’s dissatisfaction with Maresca’s abrupt departure in January, during which they allege he engaged in discussions with City while still under contract. The club is reportedly ready to pursue financial restitution and may consider escalating the issue to the Premier League if an amicable resolution is not reached.

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali referenced possible legal complexities regarding Maresca’s exit at a recent conference in Los Angeles, hinting at unresolved issues. “The change wasn’t the club’s decision,” he remarked, adding that the specifics behind it would be clarified in due course.

Maresca’s role at Chelsea became untenable after failing to fulfil media obligations following a match against Bournemouth on January 2. Despite an initial promising season where Chelsea was positioned second in the Premier League, the team’s form deteriorated, and the club is now under interim management led by Callum McFarlane.

Prior to his time at Chelsea, Maresca was integral to Guardiola’s success, serving as Manchester City’s Under-23 coach and later as an assistant during their treble-winning campaign. He achieved notable success with Leicester City, securing their promotion before winning titles with Chelsea, including the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.

Meanwhile, City prepare for a poignant farewell to Guardiola. As he prepares to depart after winning 17 major trophies, discussions about naming their newly expanded North Stand in his honour are already underway.

As City gears up for their upcoming match against Bournemouth, the stakes are high; anything less than a victory could see Arsenal claiming the Premier League title, sitting five points clear after their recent win over Burnley.

As this saga unfolds, it is a reminder of the intricate web that connects managerial moves and club loyalties in modern football, where past allegiances can cloud current ambitions.
