Zack Polanski is being “formally investigated” after he failed to pay council tax for a narrowboat he was living on, reports BritPanorama.
Waltham Forest council states it is working to “establish the full picture” following the Green Party leader’s admission of underpaying tax for three years. The investigation will involve collaboration with Mr Polanski’s team and has been initiated after his refusal to answer direct questions regarding his tax payments.
Initial assessments suggest that Mr Polanski could owe more than £4,000 in council tax. He described the error as an “unintentional mistake” when he publicly acknowledged the issue on Monday.
Previously, Mr Polanski asserted that the houseboat was not subject to council tax, claiming he stayed there only “occasionally” while renting a room elsewhere. However, local businesses and neighbours indicated that the 72ft narrowboat was actually his primary residence. Additionally, advertisements related to the sale of the boat mentioned that he and his partner are moving to a house.
Furthermore, Mr Polanski is registered to vote at an address near the marina, which he has also used for mail. His other residence is reported to be a £2 million five-bedroom property in Hackney, where he resides with a fellow party member.
The investigation into Mr Polanski comes amid accusations of “staggering hypocrisy” from political opponents, particularly after he advocated for a wealth tax targeting billionaires. A spokesperson from the Labour Party has also criticized his credibility.
Waltham Forest council remarked on the complexity of the situation, with specific regulations regarding moorings at Springfield Marina. They noted that while residential moorings could qualify for an exemption, they understood that the current mooring does not meet that classification. The council is in communication with Mr Polanski’s team to clarify the tax situation.
The Green Party confirmed that Mr Polanski has taken immediate action to rectify any outstanding tax obligations and expressed regret for the misstep, attributing the issue to the unique circumstances of living on a houseboat. This situation is compounded by previous misstatements from Mr Polanski regarding his professional affiliations, including erroneous claims about working with the Red Cross and the Ministry of Justice.
