Golf legend Jim Colbert passes away at 85
Golf legend Jim Colbert has passed away at the age of 85, reports BritPanorama.
The American, who became one of the most recognisable figures in professional golf, claimed eight victories on the PGA Tour throughout his career. His success continued well into his later years, with Colbert securing an impressive 20 triumphs on the Senior Tour.
The PGA Champions Tour paid tribute to the late golfer, stating: “Colbert made 1,091 combined starts across the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. Even though golf wasn’t in his original career plans, he made it his life’s work. Rest in peace, Jim Colbert.” The PGA Tour did not disclose a cause of death.
Colbert was known for his distinctive bucket hat, a trademark accessory that arose from a near-fatal incident in 1957, when he almost succumbed to sunstroke during a tournament. Medical professionals advised him to wear headgear ever since. Despite a brief phase with a baseball cap in 1970, he returned to his signature look, recognising its significance to his identity in the sport.
Colbert’s journey to golfing success began unexpectedly after he attended Kansas State University on a football scholarship. An injury prompted him to switch sports, eventually leading him to a life in golf. He made his professional debut on the PGA Tour after turning pro in the early 1970s, with his first victory at the 1969 Monsanto Invitational Open. He continued to make his mark, achieving notable finishes at major championships, including a tie for fourth at the Masters in 1974.
His career faced a significant challenge in 1996 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, later undergoing surgery. Remarkably, he returned to competitive golf two years later, demonstrating resilience by winning the Transamerica tournament. Beyond his competitive achievements, Colbert expanded his influence in golf through his business, Jim Colbert Golf, which now encompasses 23 courses.
Colbert’s legacy is not only defined by his on-course victories but also by his unique style and significant contributions to the golf community, making it clear that even in his absence, his impact will be felt deeply within the sport.
In his passing, golf has lost not just a champion, but a personality whose distinctive hat and spirit are etched into its history. Colbert was a reminder that individuality often defines greatness on the green.
