Phil Foden agrees to new Manchester City contract

Phil Foden has secured an agreement in principle with Manchester City to remain at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, with the club retaining the option to extend by a further twelve months, reports BritPanorama.

The England international’s existing terms were set to expire next summer, but he is poised to commit his long-term future to the club where he has spent virtually his entire footballing life.

Foden, now 25, first joined City as a four-year-old, emerging as a standout product of the club’s youth development system. He made his senior debut in 2017, when Pep Guardiola introduced him during a Champions League match against Feyenoord at just seventeen years old.

Since then, he has amassed over 365 first-team appearances, netting 110 goals and providing 66 assists across all competitions. His trophy cabinet reflects City’s domestic dominance, boasting six Premier League winners’ medals along with a Champions League title and two FA Cup victories.

Despite his past success, Foden’s performances have notably declined since he was named PFA Player of the Year for the 2023/24 campaign. As of now, he has not scored since mid-December, and his regular place in the starting lineup has remained elusive since March.

Foden appeared as a substitute during a recent intense match at Goodison Park, where City engaged in a six-goal contest that left them trailing Arsenal by five points in the title race, although City still have a match in hand. Despite ongoing challenges, sources close to the player assert that he has never considered leaving the club.

With his new contract secured, the midfielder’s prospects for the upcoming summer tournament with the national team remain uncertain. England manager Thomas Tuchel cautioned that Foden’s place in his 24-man World Cup squad cannot be taken for granted, despite his being the only player to start in both matches during England’s final training camp.

The new contract underscores a mutual trust between player and club as Foden seeks to regain the form that established him as one of the nation’s standout talents just a year prior. As the season unfolds, the spotlight will remain on Foden, a reminder that in the world of football, even the brightest stars must continually strive to shine.
