Wu Yize claims dramatic World Snooker Championship title
Wu Yize claimed the World Snooker Championship title in the most dramatic fashion, edging past Shaun Murphy 18-17 in a nail-biting final-frame decider at the Crucible, reports BritPanorama.
The 22-year-old Chinese star is now the second-youngest player ever to lift the trophy, behind only Stephen Hendry. His victory speech resonated with many, highlighting his close relationship with his family.
When BBC presenter Hazel Irvine asked him about his parents, Wu paused to collect himself, reflecting on their support throughout his journey. “My parents are the true champions,” he conveyed through a translator, emphasizing their sacrifices and strength.
In his post-match press conference, Wu spoke candidly about his mother’s health struggles. “My mum wasn’t in very good health for a long time. During our time in Sheffield, she was in hospital a lot,” he noted. The good news is she is now doing much better, having only recently been able to visit him in Britain.
Wu shared a particularly touching memory from earlier in his career when he faced significant challenges. “She told me, ‘Don’t come back home; I can manage everything,'” he recalled. This unwavering support from his parents has been crucial throughout his demanding path to success.
They relocated from Lanzhou, China, to Sheffield when Wu was a teenager, during which time they faced financial hardships and homesickness. His father even gave up his job to support Wu’s ambitions, leading to conditions that were often difficult. “We shared a tiny windowless room and even slept in the same bed for the first two years in Yorkshire,” Wu explained, highlighting the resilience needed to carve out his snooker career.
Murphy was gracious in defeat, congratulating Wu on his triumph. “I’d like to be the first to congratulate Wu Yize and his family. I said sometime earlier in the season that he would be world champion one day; it’s just a real shame that it was today,” he remarked.
As for celebrations, the new champion plans to keep it low-key. “Since the first session, I was feeling nerves all the time. So right now, I just want to go to bed,” Wu stated, underscoring the toll the tournament took on him.
This championship marks not just a monumental achievement for Wu Yize but also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices that often underpin success in sports. The journey of a champion is frequently littered with struggles that shape both character and resolve.
