Ukraine achieved a record monthly export of rapeseed oil in September 2025, shipping 108,800 tonnes — 4.5 times more than in August, according to Agroportal. Of this volume, 92,000 tonnes (85 % of total Ukrainian rapeseed oil exports) were delivered to EU countries, restoring Ukraine’s position as the top supplier. Previously, Kenya led EU imports of this commodity in July–August, but from July to 21 September 2025 Ukraine regained its leading role. Analysts attribute this surge to strategic decisions by Ukrainian authorities and businesses, notably the introduction of an export duty on rapeseed from 4 September 2025, which boosted domestic processing and increased oil exports.
Strategic value for EU production and supply chains
Ukrainian rapeseed oil imports form a significant raw material base for EU processing industries, feeding food production, biodiesel manufacturing, and animal feed sectors. This reliable supply supports the stability of EU internal markets, allowing producers to plan operations with greater certainty and reduce the risk of sudden shortages.
Strengthening economic ties amid geopolitical challenges
The intensification of rapeseed oil exports reinforces economic links between Ukraine and the EU, a strategic factor in the context of the ongoing conflict with Russia. For the EU, dependable Ukrainian supplies enhance food security, especially as domestic rapeseed oil production declines. Such cooperation underscores Ukraine’s role as a critical partner in Europe’s energy and food supply chains.
Market competitiveness and logistical advantages
Ukraine’s proximity to key EU markets reduces logistical costs compared to more distant suppliers, giving EU companies access to more efficient delivery channels. Exporting processed oil rather than raw rapeseed also delivers value-added advantages, enabling EU processors to work with ready-to-use products while lowering costs for handling and refining. This strengthens competition and price efficiency in the European rapeseed oil market.
Economic resilience and broader stability
Supporting Ukraine’s agricultural exports bolsters its economic resilience, a factor of growing importance for EU stability given the wider security environment. The expansion of processed rapeseed oil exports reflects both Ukraine’s strategic adaptation to global market conditions and its strengthening economic role in Europe’s supply network.
Ukraine’s recent export surge demonstrates the interlinked benefits for producers, importers, and broader regional stability, positioning the country as a key contributor to European food and energy security.
