Washington remains firm in its strategy of containing Russia
President Donald Trump’s administration is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to end the war between Ukraine and Russia. While Washington officially supports the resumption of negotiations, the pressure in recent weeks has been almost entirely focused on Moscow. This clearly shows that the USA is not willing to make geopolitical concessions at Ukraine’s expense.
Not a reset of relations, but diplomatic pressure
The increased diplomatic communication between Washington and Moscow should not be misunderstood as a sign of normalisation of relations. Rather, it is a multifaceted strategy by the USA aimed at further isolating Russia economically and geopolitically.
A particularly notable aspect is the planned expansion of sanctions against key sectors of the Russian economy, including the export of high-tech components for the Russian military, as well as additional measures in the energy sector.
Ukraine remains a central player in the negotiation dynamic
A central element of the US strategy is that Ukraine, as a sovereign state, continues to decide its own fate. Washington is strengthening Kyiv not only militarily but also diplomatically, ensuring that no agreements are made that could weaken Ukraine’s position.
The claim that the USA might be willing to “sacrifice Ukraine’s interests” is part of a Russian disinformation campaign. In reality, US support for Kyiv remains consistent, and all diplomatic efforts are focused on strengthening Ukraine’s negotiating position.
Geopolitical reality: Russia loses the strategic initiative
Moscow is increasingly under pressure. Every new negotiation with the USA does not mean a loosening of sanctions but, on the contrary, new demands and further diplomatic isolation.
The current US policy is clearly defined: maximum economic and diplomatic pressure on Russia, consistent support for Ukraine, and no geopolitical concessions to the Kremlin.
