Massive explosives discovered adjacent to TurkStream gas pipeline triggers Serbian state of emergency

Serbian security forces have launched a major operation in the northern Vojvodina region after discovering two large backpacks containing high-powered explosives and detonators mere metres from the TurkStream gas pipeline. The incident, which Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said could have severed gas supplies to Hungary and northern Serbia, has prompted a state of emergency and a large-scale military and police deployment near the town of Kanjiza.

Pipeline threat and presidential warning

President Vucic confirmed the discovery of the explosives close to the village of Velebit, stating that had the pipeline been detonated, Hungary and northern Serbia would have been left without gas. He declared that authorities would “mercilessly deal with anyone who threatens Serbia’s security”. Vucic added that he had spoken with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about the situation, as investigative actions continued at the scene with the hope of resolving the matter without casualties.

Military and police lockdown in Vojvodina

From early morning, Serbian criminal police, military police and other armed forces units have blockaded and are combing through part of the Kanjiza municipality. The operation aims to search for prohibited substances dangerous to citizens’ lives and for means intended against the country’s critical infrastructure objects. Several transport routes in the Kanjiza community have been sealed off, including the road from Novi Knezevac towards the village of Vojvoda Zimonjic, and the road from Vojvoda Zimonjic to Velebit, with helicopters audible overhead.

Security sweep for infrastructure threats

The coordinated security sweep is focused on an area with a significant ethnic Hungarian population, historically known as Madjarkaniza. The move to shut down roads and declare a local state of emergency reflects the severity with which Belgrade treats the potential threat to the TurkStream pipeline, a critical energy artery that transits through Serbia. President Vucic made the announcement while touring a separate construction site, linking the security response directly to national infrastructure protection.

Political context and regional implications

The discovery comes against a backdrop of heightened political tension in the region, with Hungarian elections approaching. While no group has claimed responsibility for planting the explosives, the incident’s location near a key energy supply route for Hungary adds a complex geopolitical dimension. The direct communication between the Serbian and Hungarian leaders underscores the cross-border ramifications of any attack on the pipeline, which is vital for energy security in parts of Central Europe.

Ongoing investigation and future precautions

Authorities have not released details regarding potential suspects or the specific type of explosives found. The ongoing investigation will likely focus on forensic evidence from the backpacks and any surveillance from the pipeline’s security corridor. The incident is expected to lead to a permanent increase in security measures around Serbia’s critical energy infrastructure, with potential for increased regional intelligence cooperation to prevent similar threats.
