Europe strengthens corn imports from Ukraine amid drought impact

Europe is set to maintain and possibly expand imports of Ukrainian corn in the 2025–2026 season, reinforcing its food security as climate conditions and global competition reshape the market. According to Agroportal, EU countries such as Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium are expected to remain stable buyers of Ukrainian supplies.

Drought reduces EU harvest, boosting Ukrainian role

The EU corn harvest is forecast to fall by about 2 million tons due to drought, creating a shortfall in feed grain. Southern European countries, particularly Spain and Italy, are facing significant deficits, which Ukrainian corn is positioned to cover. This ensures feed supply for livestock, poultry and feed producers, highlighting the commodity’s strategic role in Europe’s agricultural system.

Competitive market dynamics shape Ukrainian exports

The European market remains highly competitive, with imports also arriving from the United States and South America. Yet Ukraine’s corn holds an advantage, being often cheaper due to lower logistics costs, close proximity and large-scale production. In 2024, the EU received around 14.06 million tons of Ukrainian corn, accounting for nearly half of Ukraine’s total corn exports and in some seasons representing 57% of EU imports from non-EU countries.

Economic benefits for European industry

European importers, processors and logistics firms benefit directly from stable contracts linked to Ukrainian corn. The trade supports transport companies, ports, storage facilities and feed manufacturers, sustaining employment and revenues across Europe’s supply chain. The affordability of Ukrainian corn also reduces costs for animal feed and livestock production at a time when energy and fertilizer expenses remain elevated across Europe.

Strategic diversification and security

Ukraine’s consistent role as a supplier reduces the EU’s dependence on Brazil and Argentina and prevents any potential re-entry of Russian corn into the European market. With its competitive pricing, reliable logistics and proven quality, Ukrainian corn remains a cornerstone for Europe’s food security, while simultaneously strengthening resilience against market volatility and geopolitical risks.
