Yves Bissouma reveals impact of repeated burglaries on mental health
Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma has spoken out about the profound psychological effects following three targeted burglaries, which led to the theft of valuables worth nearly £1 million, reports BritPanorama.
The 29-year-old revealed that these incidents have left him grappling with depression, paranoia, and sleepless nights. Bissouma acknowledged the toll the burglaries have taken on his well-being, stating that he has resorted to sleeping at Tottenham’s training ground due to his fear of staying at home.
The first burglary occurred in June 2024 when he was on holiday in Cannes, where he was assaulted with pepper spray and his £260,000 watch was stolen. In a subsequent incident in November, masked intruders attempted to break into his home while he was inside with friends, leading him to flee through the garden after injuring himself.
The most recent theft happened in July, during which thieves escaped with high-end watches and luxury items. Bissouma described the feeling of vulnerability, revealing, “Sometimes I was too scared to sleep at home, so I was taking my stuff and sleeping in the training ground.”
He expressed regret for the damage this situation has caused his image as a professional athlete, especially concerning the impact on his family. “This broke something in me I didn’t even know I could break. I apologise to the fans,” he stated. Bissouma’s admissions highlight not only his personal struggles but also the pressures and risks faced by high-profile athletes.
Furthermore, the midfielder was seen in recent footage inhaling nitrous oxide, which he indicated was a coping mechanism amid his distress. Bissouma’s situation was further complicated by a lack of playing time this season, attributed to both a previous suspension for conduct issues and an ankle injury sustained while representing the Mali national team.
In the UK, possession of nitrous oxide for recreational use has been illegal since 2023, carrying a potential two-year prison sentence. Tottenham Hotspur has announced that they are investigating the matter internally, ensuring that appropriate actions are taken considering the circumstances.
As Bissouma navigates these turbulent waters, his experience serves as a stark reminder of the sometimes invisible battles faced by those in the public eye, illustrating how even high-profile athletes are susceptible to personal crises that can overshadow their professional achievements.
