Dennis ‘Loverboy’ Condrey passes away at 74

Dennis ‘Loverboy’ Condrey, the wrestling icon who rose to fame as one half of The Midnight Express alongside Bobby Eaton, has passed away aged 74, reports BritPanorama.

Fellow professional wrestler Dax Harwood announced the news on Friday through an emotional Instagram post, describing Condrey as a “true pioneer of professional wrestling.” No cause of death has been disclosed.

Condrey’s tag team partnership with Eaton during the 1980s is widely regarded as one of the finest in wrestling history. Eaton himself passed away in 2021. Following the announcement of Condrey’s death, tributes from across the wrestling community have flooded in.

Harwood reflected on the profound bond he shared with Condrey, noting that they would exchange messages after matches. The veteran wrestler would offer guidance, highlighting aspects of Harwood’s performances that could be improved. Harwood wrote: “That is something that’ll never be lost on me. One of my heroes loved me enough to take time out of his day to let me know how proud he was of me.”

He pledged to honour Condrey’s memory throughout his remaining years in the sport, vowing to preserve The Midnight Express’ legacy, stating, “They paved this road so all other tag teams could walk easier.” Condrey began his professional wrestling career in 1973, spanning nearly 40 years until his retirement in 2011.

Condrey achieved significant recognition during the late 1970s and 1980s as a founding member of The Midnight Express, which Harwood considers unmatched in the sport’s history. Harwood asserted, “I can tell you with absolute honesty and sincerity, I’ve never seen a better Tag Team than Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton.”

Throughout his career, Condrey competed across various promotions, including the American Wrestling Association and the National Wrestling Alliance. All Elite Wrestling expressed condolences on X, joining the chorus of tributes celebrating Condrey’s contributions to the sport.

Fans have praised Condrey’s influence on wrestling, with many considering him among the greatest heel tag team wrestlers ever to compete. Wrestling media personality Anthony Maurizio paid tribute, expressing hope that Condrey had been reunited with his former partner Eaton. Harwood confirmed that Condrey’s wife, Theresa, had authorised a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs and household expenses.

Condrey’s passing is a stark reminder of the legacies that define the wrestling world. In a sport that often thrives on spectacle, the bonds forged between its stars reveal the enduring human element behind the persona and performance.
