Wayne Rooney eyes return to football management despite ongoing BBC contract

Wayne Rooney aims for return to football management

Wayne Rooney has signalled his willingness to step back into football management ahead of the upcoming campaign, with his sights set on opportunities in the Championship or League One, reports BritPanorama.

The announcement comes shortly after Rooney celebrated his 40th birthday alongside his wife, Coleen, who marked her milestone with a lavish party at their Cheshire estate. The celebration reportedly featured a massive marquee, with VIP guests arriving by helicopter, as described by various sources.

Since his departure from Plymouth Argyle in December 2024 after a lacklustre spell in charge, Rooney has transitioned into a television role. He secured a £400,000-a-year contract as a BBC pundit for Match of the Day, following the exit of long-serving presenter Gary Lineker. Despite enjoying his current position, insiders reveal that Rooney is keen on returning to management if the right opportunity presents itself.

A source noted, “Wayne is enjoying his telly work, but he does want to get back into management. He will be open to it if the right opportunity comes up.” There is an expectation that he would prefer to secure a managerial role prior to the start of the summer transfer window, enabling him to prepare for the new season in August.

Rooney’s managerial record has seen its share of challenges. He began his journey with Derby County in January 2021 but faced significant obstacles, including a 21-point deduction that led to the club’s relegation. Following a brief stint in the United States with DC United, wherein he left after just one season, Rooney’s subsequent appointment at Birmingham City ended with his dismissal in January 2024.

As a player, Rooney remains a renowned figure, having scored 253 goals for Manchester United and netting 53 times for the England national team across 120 appearances. His experience on the pitch continues to cast a long shadow over his managerial ambitions.

As the football world awaits Rooney’s next move, many will be curious whether his return will invigorate a career that has experienced both highs and lows. The romantic notion of a beloved football figure reclaiming the touchline remains a tantalising prospect for fans and pundits alike.
