Walsall sack Mat Sadler after poor run of form
Walsall have parted ways with manager Mat Sadler following a significant downturn in performance, reports BritPanorama.
The club secured only one victory in their last 11 matches, causing them to drop from the top of the League Two table at Christmas to their current position of 11th. Their recent struggles include four defeats out of five games, culminating in a loss against Salford on Tuesday night.
Co-chairman Ben Boycott issued a statement acknowledging Sadler’s contributions. “I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the significant efforts and contributions of Mat, both as a professional and as a person, during his time at the club. We thank him for his dedicated service and wish him the very best for the future,” he said.
Sadler took over as manager in May 2023, during which time he led the team to the League Two play-off final last year and set a club record with nine consecutive league victories. He was also recognised as League Two Manager of the Month for both December 2024 and September 2025.
Darren Byfield has been appointed as the caretaker manager and will lead the side into their next fixture against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday. Terry Connor and the remaining coaching staff will provide support throughout this transitional period.
The Saddlers are now on the lookout for a permanent replacement, with just ten matches left in the season and only three points separating them from Grimsby Town, who currently occupy the final play-off spot. Before his managerial role, Sadler had a successful playing career, making over 500 appearances, notably for his boyhood club Birmingham City in the Premier League.
In the unpredictable world of football management, this departure serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can shift, leaving Walsall to ponder their next move amidst a backdrop of fluctuating expectations.
