Wales breaks 15-match Six Nations losing streak with victory over Italy

Wales secures first Six Nations win in over three years

Wales concluded their troubling 15-match losing streak in the Six Nations by defeating Italy 31-17 at the Principality Stadium on Saturday, reports BritPanorama.

The victory marked a significant milestone, with Welsh rugby fans celebrating a long-awaited success—1,099 days since their last tournament win, which also came against Italy three years prior.

The atmosphere was electric, with 70,000 supporters in Cardiff finally rewarded with a performance worth cheering for. This moment is a critical juncture for Welsh rugby, which has faced a string of difficulties at both club and international levels over the last three years.

Wales dominated the match, particularly in the first half. Aaron Wainwright shone brightly, scoring two tries early in the game. The number eight powered through multiple tackles for his first touchdown in the 14th minute and later finished off a driving lineout for his second. Captain Dewi Lake also contributed, scoring from another lineout maul, leading to a commanding 21-0 advantage at halftime.

Fly-half Dan Edwards showcased his accuracy, converting all three tries and adding a try of his own just three minutes into the second half. He further extended their lead with a drop goal, taking it to 31-0 by the 48th minute.

However, Italy responded vigorously, scoring three tries late in the match. Substitute hooker Martino di Bartolomeo opened their account in the 53rd minute following a strong driving maul, with Tommaso Allan adding another try shortly after. Paolo Garbisi crossed for a third in the closing moments, but it came too late to change the outcome of the match.

Despite the win, Wales sits at the bottom of the Six Nations table, though they managed to secure a crucial bonus point. A glimmer of hope remains as they could potentially escape the wooden spoon if England suffers a heavy defeat against France later that evening.

In a sport where fortunes can shift dramatically, this result serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of rugby—where even a single victory can temporarily lift the weight of expectations and pressure from beleaguered shoulders.
