Virgil van Dijk addresses Liverpool’s poor performance following Nottingham Forest defeat

Virgil van Dijk has commented on Liverpool’s disappointing performance after a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield. The loss was marked by an opening goal following a VAR check in the 33rd minute, as Murillo headed in from an Eliiot Anderson corner. Nicolò Savona added a second goal just after halftime, before Morgan Gibbs-White sealed the victory with a third, reports BritPanorama.

With Liverpool struggling, fans vacated Anfield in large numbers before the final whistle. Their frustration has been palpable, underscored by Liverpool’s lack of wins — just three from their last 11 matches across all competitions as manager Arne Slot grapples with the team’s ongoing issues.

Reflecting on the supporters’ reaction, Van Dijk said, “I can’t decide obviously what the supporters are doing. If they leave early, obviously I can understand the frustration fully.” He acknowledged the longstanding relationship between Liverpool and its fanbase, expressing optimism that supporters will remain loyal: “I’m pretty sure that they will always stick with us regardless. And when we come out of this – because we will come out of this – they will be there with us as well.”

The captain identified defensive frailties as a major concern, noting, “We concede too many easy goals. I think in the first half an hour we were good, created good opportunities.” He attributed part of the defeat to the team’s inability to control set-pieces, saying, “You can ask yourself if he was in front of Alisson, but it counted so you’re 1-0 down.”

Van Dijk admitted the team was not ‘good in terms of the battles’ and noted the ‘nervousness after we conceded’, highlighting an urgent need for accountability among players. He stated, “In order to win games, you have to take responsibility,” encouraging the squad to unite and improve their performances.

Criticism has also been directed at new signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz for their underwhelming contributions since joining Liverpool. Van Dijk underscored the collective effort needed for a turnaround: “Obviously everyone is disappointed, like they should be, because losing at home against Nottingham Forest is, in my eyes, very bad.”

As the team navigates this difficult period, it serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges facing clubs when form dips and fan expectations rise. Liverpool’s next steps will be crucial in determining whether they can rally back from this latest setback.
