Virgil van Dijk criticises Liverpool’s performance after FA Cup defeat

Virgil van Dijk delivered a damning assessment of his Liverpool teammates following their comprehensive FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, reports BritPanorama.

The Dutch captain suggested the Reds simply stopped competing during the 4-0 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium. After the match, Van Dijk remarked, “Obviously, you come out of the dressing room with the right intentions to score and make it 2-1 and change the game.” However, he noted that the opposite occurred, making it difficult to recover from a 3-0 deficit.

He acknowledged it was mentally taxing for the squad, saying, “It’s mentally very tough at the moment, I must say.” The defender offered an apology to the Liverpool fans who travelled to Manchester, many of whom left before the final whistle, stating, “I can only apologise to the fans for what we have shown, especially the second. I can understand the fans’ frustration as well.”

Liverpool started the match competitively but saw their efforts unravel after Van Dijk conceded a foul on Nico O’Reilly, paving the way for Erling Haaland to put City ahead. This defeat marks Liverpool’s fifteenth loss this season, adding to the pressure on manager Arne Slot.

Reflecting on the season’s challenges, Van Dijk expressed frustration at the team’s inconsistency: “I’ve been there already many times this season when I’ve had hope and then we couldn’t build on performances.” Now, he faces the task of rallying his teammates ahead of the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

As the focus shifts to European competition, the defeat underscores a sobering reality for Liverpool: with domestic silverware now out of reach, their hopes for redemption rely solely on success in Europe, an outcome that seems increasingly precarious.
