Vinicius Jr clarifies emotional goal celebration in Real Madrid's win over Manchester City

Vinicius Junior addresses celebration aimed at Manchester City supporters

Vinicius Junior has revealed that his tearful celebration directed at Manchester City supporters during Tuesday night’s Champions League clash was intended as a statement rather than an insult, reports BritPanorama.

The Brazilian forward explained that his gesture was a direct response to being ridiculed by City fans following his defeat to Rodri in the 2024 Ballon d’Or vote. “The last time I came to Man City, they were sort of making fun of me, saying maybe I was crying about the Ballon d’Or,” he stated.

“I wasn’t disrespecting the City fans March 18, 2026, it was just a way to sort of prove myself to the Manchester City fanbase.” Vinicius’ actions come amidst a backdrop of historical animosity between him and City supporters, which began during last year’s fixture at the Etihad Stadium, where a large banner depicting Rodri with the prestigious trophy was unveiled.

On Tuesday evening, the 24-year-old exacted his retribution by performing a mocking crying gesture after converting from the penalty spot, effectively ending the contest as a competitive affair. This penalty was awarded following Bernardo Silva’s dismissal for a deliberate handball offence that left City facing an uphill battle with ten men.

Pep Guardiola, speaking after the match, acknowledged the challenges of playing with ten men, remarking, “Ten against 11, it’s almost impossible.” Yet, he maintained a defiant tone regarding his team’s future prospects: “Next season will be bright, we will be back,” he declared.

Guardiola also reflected on the narrow margins of elite competition, praising his players’ character amidst the defeat. “We have an extraordinary team and extraordinary group of players,” he added, noting the support from fans who understood the nature of the challenge faced in the match.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s interim manager Alvaro Arbeloa heaped praise on goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for his heroics during the early stages of the match, stating, “Maybe Thibaut is the best in history. We are so happy to have him with us.”

As for Vinicius, his performance not only secured a vital victory for Real Madrid but also served as a personal vindication, illustrating how narratives in sport can dramatically pivot on a singular match under the pressing weight of historical context.
