UEFA investigates racism allegations following Real Madrid’s Champions League victory over Benfica
UEFA has appointed an inspector to investigate allegations of racism that overshadowed Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League, reports BritPanorama.
The decisive moment came when Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr scored a stunning goal in the 50th minute, propelling Madrid closer to the knockout stages of the tournament. However, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when Vinicius alleged he was subjected to racial abuse by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, who was observed covering his mouth as they interacted near the centre circle.
Following the incident, Real Madrid players appeared reluctant to continue play, engaging in heated discussions with Prestianni amidst growing unrest in the stands. This chaos prompted a ten-minute stoppage during which Jose Mourinho spoke with Vinicius. Ultimately, play resumed, and Real Madrid secured their victory.
In a brief statement, UEFA announced, “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of discriminatory behaviour during the UEFA Champions League 2025/2026 Knock-out Play-Off between Club Benfica and Real Madrid CF on 17 February 2026.” UEFA confirmed that more information would be released in due course.
Prestianni has denied any wrongdoing, asserting on social media that he did not direct any racist remarks towards Vinicius, whom he believes misinterpreted the exchange. “At no point did I direct racist insults at the player Vinicius Junior,” he stated. Vinicius, however, responded firmly, labelling Prestianni a “coward” and emphasizing the need to confront racism in football. “Racists are, above all, cowards,” he added, contextualizing his experience within a broader conversation about racial discrimination in sport.
Mourinho, while defending his player Prestianni, suggested that Vinicius had provoked the situation with his exuberant celebration. He commented, “When you score a goal like that you celebrate in a respectful way,” indicating that the exchange could have stemmed from the heightened emotions following the goal.
This incident marks another chapter in the ongoing discourse around racism in football, a sport continually grappling with its presence. It serves as a reminder of the complexities involved when sport and societal issues converge, underscoring how the beautiful game can become embroiled in contentious debates about conduct, accountability, and respect.
