Tyson Fury faces backlash for lion encounter ahead of April fight
Tyson Fury has found himself in hot water with fans after sharing footage of himself posing alongside a chained lion during his training camp in Thailand, reports BritPanorama.
The former world heavyweight champion is currently preparing in Pattaya for his ring return on April 11, when he’ll face Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This marks Fury’s first appearance in the ring in 16 months, but his comeback preparations have sparked controversy for all the wrong reasons.
In a video posted to Instagram, the Gypsy King can be heard calling the big cat “a good boy” and likening it to “a little Simba cat.” The encounter, intended as a light-hearted moment, quickly drew criticism for the portrayal of the chained animal.
Fury didn’t shy away from the trash talk leading up to the fight, declaring himself “the only King of the Jungle” and making a reference to Makhmudov’s nickname, “The Lion.” One caption read, “The Lion sleeps tonight – and so will you! THE KING IS COMING HOME,” underscoring his intentions for the April showdown.
However, it was the display of the captive lion that caught the public’s attention. Many followers expressed their disapproval, urging Fury to reflect on the treatment of such animals in captivity. One fan remarked, “Tyson, I think if you knew how these poor big cats were treated you’d be saddened, horrified even.” Another simply stated, “Not cool. Do your research on how they treat these animals.”
As attention shifts back to the upcoming fight, Fury will need to focus on more than just showmanship. He faces a formidable challenge in Makhmudov, who has lost only twice in his professional career, despite his recent stoppage defeat to Agit Kabayel in 2023. While Fury has had significant wins, his last victory against a full-time boxer was over Derek Chisora in 2022. His most recent outing saw him narrowly defeat UFC star Francis Ngannou in October 2023, raising questions about his current form.
As the build-up continues, the encounter with the lion serves as a reminder of how easily sport and spectacle can intermingle, often generating more buzz than the competition itself. With Fury’s charisma and controversies, the spotlight remains firmly on him as he prepares to take on Makhmudov under the bright lights of north London.
