Tyson Fury admits retirement decision strained family relationships ahead of comeback fight

Tyson Fury faces family backlash over boxing return

Tyson Fury has revealed his wife Paris and other family members stopped speaking to him after his ‘selfish’ decision to return to boxing, reports BritPanorama.

The British heavyweight will face Arslanbek Makhmudov later this year, having previously announced his retirement back in January 2025. Fury quit boxing after experiencing two defeats to Oleksandr Usyk, during which he had entered the ring undefeated.

Now, having chosen to come out of retirement for a fifth time, the 37-year-old is set to fight Makhmudov on April 11 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Fury disclosed that his decision to end his time away from the ring was not met with approval from his family. “My dad stopped speaking to me for a while. My brothers stopped speaking to me, even Paris. Everybody cut me off,” he stated.

He continued, “Nobody wanted me to return and they made that clear… but it’s my decision and my life.” Acknowledging the impact of his choice, Fury admitted, “It’s probably a bit selfish. It’s just I’m at my happiest when I’m in that ring entertaining people and I have no plans to stop any time soon.” He expressed a commitment to continue boxing, predicting he might fight until the age of 50.

Fury’s return follows two controversial losses to Usyk in 2024, results he continues to contest. He maintains, “He never beat me. He cheated. Man, he cheated.” Fury asserts that he does not need psychological help to overcome his losses, reiterating his belief that the decisions were unjust.

While his claims about Usyk lack substantiation, Fury’s return to the sport reignites discussions about his legacy. As one of his former rivals, Deontay Wilder, prepares to enter the ring again, Fury’s insistence that Wilder is no longer at his peak adds further context to the unfolding heavyweight landscape.

With a return to boxing that has met with familial resistance and a legacy to defend, Fury’s next steps will be closely scrutinized as he attempts to reclaim his status in the heavyweight ranks.

As the sport of boxing ebbs and flows with the drama of its protagonists, Fury’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices athletes make, often straddling the line between personal ambition and familial ties.
