Tuchel explains selection of expanded 35-man England squad ahead of World Cup friendlies

Tuchel selects expanded squad for England friendlies

Thomas Tuchel has revealed his reasoning for selecting an expanded 35-man England squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan as the World Cup draws nearer, reports BritPanorama.

The German coach has assembled a substantial group that includes five goalkeepers, 11 defenders, eight midfielders, and 11 forwards. This selection marks a strategic choice ahead of the approaching tournament.

Notably, 13 players who missed the November international window have been brought back into the fold. Tuchel explained his strategy: “We decided to divide it into basically two camps almost, so we bring players in that we haven’t seen, who haven’t played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US.”

From Friday and Saturday, a new group of 10 or 11 players will join the camp, combining fresh faces with the established squad for the match against Japan. This approach highlights Tuchel’s commitment to exploring his options ahead of the summer tournament.

The squad sees significant returns for Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo, both of whom have thrived since Michael Carrick took charge at Old Trafford following Ruben Amorim’s departure. Maguire’s revival as a centre-back has been particularly striking, regaining the form that made him a regular starter for the national team.

Mainoo’s recall is equally significant as he struggled for playing time under Amorim. His recent performances warrant this opportunity, and both players will aim to cement their places ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has also secured a place in the squad following strong performances at Leeds, boosting his chances of making the trip to North America. He will likely compete for a backup role behind captain Harry Kane, who remains central to England’s hopes, particularly given his impressive form at Bayern Munich.

Dominic Solanke emerges as another option to support Kane, despite Tottenham’s inconsistent season. The attacking lineup is bolstered by Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka.

The competition among goalkeepers intensifies, with Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, Jason Steele, and James Trafford all vying for the starting position. In defence, established players such as Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Tino Livramento, and John Stones join the returning Maguire, while overseas experience is present in Jarrell Quansah and Fikayo Tomori.

James Garner’s inclusion as a midfielder represents a surprise, joining Elliot Anderson, Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, and Adam Wharton as Tuchel’s central options.

England’s full squad:

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), James Trafford (Manchester City), Aaron Ramsdale (Newcastle United), Jason Steele (Brighton & Hove Albion)

Defenders: Dan Burn (Newcastle United), Marc Guéhi (Manchester City), Lewis Hall (Newcastle United), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Tino Livramento (Newcastle United), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Nico O’Reilly (Manchester City), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), Djed Spence (Tottenham Hotspur), John Stones (Manchester City), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)

Midfielders: Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), James Garner (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Brentford), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Noni Madueke (Arsenal), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona, loan from Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Dominic Solanke (Tottenham Hotspur)

With so many talents vying for places, the upcoming friendlies will provide a valuable opportunity for Tuchel to assess player dynamics and decide what combinations might shine on the world stage this summer.
