Tuchel explains Alexander-Arnold’s England omission ahead of World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has explained his decision to leave Trent Alexander-Arnold out of his latest England squad, with this summer’s World Cup creeping closer, reports BritPanorama.

The right-back has not been selected for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan following a debut season at Real Madrid marked by inconsistency.

Alexander-Arnold’s natural talent is well-recognized, having been a key player for Liverpool during their triumphs under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. However, he has struggled to adapt to the international stage and now faces the prospect of missing out on the World Cup.

During a press conference, Tuchel addressed the exclusion, stating, “It’s a tough decision, and Trent is a big name – a huge talent with an impressive career. I know what he can give us, but I’ve opted for others.” He added, “The players in camp at right full-back must push to earn their spot on the plane to the World Cup.”

Apart from Alexander-Arnold, another notable absentee is Ollie Watkins, who had been instrumental for England during the 2024 European Championships but has recently faced inconsistency at Aston Villa.

Despite these omissions, Tuchel has recalled Manchester United players Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo, who have shown improved performance under interim manager Michael Carrick after a challenging period. Tuchel highlighted their contributions, stating, “Manchester United have had an outstanding run since Michael Carrick took charge, and Harry and Kobbie have been a big part of that.”

This gathering is Tuchel’s last opportunity before the team travels to the US for further preparations, making it essential for players to demonstrate their form and compatibility within the squad.

As the World Cup approaches, the decisions made in these friendlies will be crucial, revealing the level of competition for places and the balance of experience and youth that England hopes to achieve for the tournament ahead.

It’s a landscape where the margins are thin; as selections loom large, even the most celebrated talents can find themselves on the sideline, a reminder that form and fit often dictate those fateful choices at this level.
