Trump expresses support for Iran's World Cup participation despite escalating regional tensions

Donald Trump assures welcome for Iran at World Cup

US President Donald Trump has assured FIFA that Iran is “welcome” to compete at this summer’s World Cup, according to Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president, reports BritPanorama.

Iran’s participation in the tournament is uncertain after joint military strikes by the United States and Israel that began on February 28, escalating regional tensions. This backdrop has prompted retaliatory threats from Tehran and drawn neighbouring countries into the conflict.

Earlier statements from Trump indicated indifference regarding Iran’s World Cup involvement, saying he “really didn’t care.” However, following a recent meeting with Infantino, Trump has shifted his position, supporting the Iranian team’s participation.

Infantino elaborated on social media after their discussion: “During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.” He emphasized the importance of global events like the FIFA World Cup in uniting people.

Iran is scheduled to play its group games in the US against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Simultaneously, the US will compete in Group D alongside Paraguay, Australia, and an awaiting opponent from the playoff between Turkey, Romania, Slovakia, and Kosovo. Should both teams secure second place in their groups, they would face each other in the Round of 32 on June 3 in Dallas.

However, a travel ban instituted by Trump raises concerns regarding Iranian supporters’ ability to attend the matches. FIFA general secretary Mattias Grafstrom acknowledged that the governing body will closely monitor the evolving situation as the tournament approaches.

The upcoming 2026 World Cup will also feature a new 48-team format, expanding from the current 32-team structure and introducing a total of 104 matches. This significant expansion aims to enhance global participation and excitement surrounding the event.

With discussions around team participation and geopolitical tensions intertwining, the World Cup in the US presents a complex landscape, highlighting the intertwining of sport and global politics. As fans make travel arrangements, the tournament serves as a poignant reminder of how football can act as a bridge amidst strife.
