Trent Alexander-Arnold faces harsh criticism from Spanish media
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been subjected to a brutal assessment from the Spanish press following Real Madrid’s disappointing 1-1 stalemate with Girona at the weekend, reports BritPanorama.
Alfredo Relano, a prominent football journalist with Marca, delivered a harsh critique of the 27-year-old, who left Liverpool during the summer with aspirations of claiming the Ballon d’Or but has struggled at the Bernabeu.
Relano described Alexander-Arnold as appearing “clueless” and likened him to “a rabbit in the headlights.” He noted that while the defender shows quality on set pieces, his contributions during open play were notably lacking.
The England international’s performance against Girona did little to mitigate criticism, as a careless first-half pass nearly gifted the opposition a goal. His wide deliveries were also erratic, failing to connect with intended targets throughout the match.
This criticism marks a stark reversal from earlier praise Alexander-Arnold received from AS, which highlighted his playmaking abilities and potential set-piece expertise under manager Xabi Alonso. However, he remains without a goal or assist in ten appearances for Real Madrid across La Liga and the Champions League this season, completing the full 90 minutes in only two matches.
Despite the mounting pressure, Xabi Alonso has defended his player, asserting that the struggles are common during an inaugural season at a new club: “It’s his first year, and this adjustment period is normal.” Alonso emphasised the need for support during this transitional phase.
With competition from Dani Carvajal and Federico Valverde, coupled with injury setbacks, Alexander-Arnold’s position remains precarious. The current form has also led to his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s final England squad of the year, as he hopes to regain his finest form ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
This saga serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by players in unfamiliar environments, where expectations can sometimes cloud the realities of adaptation and performance. As Alexander-Arnold navigates these turbulent waters, the resilience required to reclaim his position in the starting line-up will be closely watched, potentially refining his journey at Real Madrid into one imbued with greater significance.
