Transgender player breaches FA rules by competing in women's football despite ban

Transgender player violates FA’s prohibition in women’s football

A transgender player has been found in breach of the Football Association’s prohibition on individuals born male participating in women’s football while playing for West Yorkshire Whippets football club, reports BritPanorama.

The unidentified footballer participated in matches for the club after the ban took effect on 1 June, following a Supreme Court ruling in April. Evidence indicates that the player competed on the very day the new regulations were enacted and continued throughout the summer.

Subsequent to the situation being brought to light by SEEN in Sport, an organisation advocating for fairness in women’s sport, the FA has terminated the individual’s registration with the club. This action was only taken after the matter was highlighted, raising questions about oversight and enforcement of the new rules across grassroots football.

Documentation obtained by Telegraph Sport reveals that the player appeared in West Yorkshire Whippets’ first three fixtures of the Harrogate & Craven Junior Girls Football League, starting in two matches and being listed as an unused substitute in another. Moreover, the club shared multiple images on their Facebook page showing the player participating in matches post-1 June.

Despite the clear evidence, the West Riding FA initially informed SEEN in Sport that they found no evidence of any rule breach. This announcement contradicted publicly available team sheets demonstrating the player’s involvement in competitive fixtures. The West Yorkshire Whippets have since withdrawn from their league following the presentation of evidence.

The club had previously expressed strong opposition to the FA’s regulations. Following the announcement of the ban, they stated, “We are deeply disappointed by the FA’s decision to ban trans women from playing in women’s football. It is exclusionary, harmful, and goes against the values we believe football should stand for inclusion, fairness, and community.” They, alongside other LGBTQ+-friendly clubs, resisted the rule change and requested the FA reconsider the policy, citing concerns of discrimination and the unfair burden it places on grassroots volunteers.

Sue Wong, spokeswoman for SEEN in Sport, highlighted discrepancies in enforcement: “A girl was punished with a six-match ban last year just for asking why there was a man on a women’s team. Why is there no similar reaction to breaches of the new FA policy?” She warned that female players face unfair competition, injury risks, and potential discrimination as long as the current situation persists, noting that insurance policies could be invalidated with the participation of ineligible players. Wong called for football authorities to ensure all leagues and affiliated clubs confirm compliance with the policy, stating, “If a club wishes to field mixed-sex teams, that’s completely fine, but they cannot call it a women’s team.”

This developing situation not only challenges the integrity of women’s football but highlights the complexities of inclusion within the sport, reflecting a wider societal debate on gender and competition.
