Tottenham Hotspur imposes bans following Nazi salute incident
Tottenham Hotspur has imposed indefinite bans on three supporters following their performance of Nazi salutes during the club’s Champions League encounter with Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this year, reports BritPanorama.
The match, held at Deutsche Bank Park on 28 January, ended in a 2-0 victory for Spurs, with goals scored by Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke. However, the triumph was overshadowed by the offensive gestures directed towards home supporters.
Reacting swiftly, the club condemned the actions, calling them “utterly abhorrent” and confirmed that those responsible had been identified and sanctioned under Spurs’ internal banning policy.
In response to the incident, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body levied a €30,000 fine against Tottenham for “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour” by supporters. Additionally, Spurs face a suspended ban on selling tickets to travelling fans for one European fixture, which would take effect if a similar offence occurs within the next twelve months. A separate fine of €2,250 was also imposed for objects hurled during the Frankfurt match.
Tottenham emphasised its full cooperation with UEFA’s investigation and its collaboration with both German authorities and the Metropolitan Police on the match day. In their statement, the club reaffirmed, “The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action,” labelling the conduct as “disgusting behaviour of a minority of so-called fans.”
Further distancing the club from the actions of the perpetrators, Tottenham stated that such actions are “in no way reflective of the values of our club and its supporters.” With the suspended sanction, travelling supporters will still be allowed to attend their upcoming European match against Atletico Madrid on 10 March, a crucial tie as the club navigates difficulties in the Premier League.
As Spurs grapple with ten winless games in league play, the clash with Atletico Madrid presents an opportunity for redemption, although the spectre of recent events looms large.
