Tom McKibbin prepares for Augusta debut
Tom McKibbin is set to make his debut at the Masters in April, sharing the spotlight with his former teacher Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, reports BritPanorama.
The 23-year-old from Holywood secured his invitation by winning the Hong Kong Open last year. Having watched the Masters on television for around 15 years, McKibbin expressed his excitement: “It’s the first tournament that comes to mind when I think of golf and to be a part of that is going to be great.”
McKibbin is taking his preparations seriously and plans to practice at Augusta this week with teammate Tyrrell Hatton, ahead of the tournament starting on April 9. “Even just going up and playing it before, being out there on our own, I’m really looking forward to that,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of familiarizing himself with the course’s challenging layout.
His extensive discussions with fellow golfers about Augusta’s hilly terrain and slopes have underscored his diligence in ensuring he is well-prepared. Beyond the Masters, McKibbin will balance a busy schedule, participating in 14 LIV events as part of Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII and competing in various DP World Tour tournaments.
This season will see him play in key events across Europe, including stops in Turkey, France, Spain, and the Irish Open at Trump Doonbeg. “I’m happy that I could play,” he confirmed, stating he would support these events regardless of the requirements placed on LIV players.
Looking ahead, McKibbin is also focused on qualifying for the US Open and is eager to enhance his record in major tournaments, hoping for better finishes than in previous appearances. “It all depends how well I play,” he added cautiously.
The anticipation surrounding his Masters debut highlights not only personal achievement but also the camaraderie and competitive spirit that defines the sport.
