Thomas Tuchel urges Ben White to address concerns with teammates after World Cup exit

Ben White recalled to England squad after four-year absence

Thomas Tuchel has declared that Ben White “deserves a second chance” with England following the Arsenal defender’s recall after a four-year international exile, reports BritPanorama. The 28-year-old has not represented his country since departing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar during the knockout stages, with the Football Association citing “personal reasons” at the time.

Reports subsequently suggested a disagreement with then-assistant manager Steve Holland, though this was repeatedly denied by former boss Gareth Southgate. Speaking at Wembley on Thursday, Tuchel revealed that White declined to discuss the circumstances of his departure.

“I asked him and he didn’t want to speak about it,” the England manager said. “I didn’t want to know about it because I think he deserves a second chance.” Tuchel emphasised that the defender needs to address matters with teammates who were present at the Qatar tournament.

“I’m not sure if ‘apologise’ is the right word, but maybe just to clear the air with the players who were there,” he explained. “I think he has done and will do with the majority of the players who come now.” The manager acknowledged that something significant must have occurred during the World Cup. “Something must have happened, because if a player leaves from a tournament it’s never good and it never can be nothing,” Tuchel stated.

He confirmed that conversations between White and his former World Cup teammates are ongoing, describing the process as “in progress” ahead of senior players including captain Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice joining the squad on Saturday morning. White’s return came about after Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah withdrew from the squad through injury, creating an unexpected opportunity for the Arsenal man.

Tuchel described the player’s response to his call-up as immediate and heartfelt. “When the chance opened up for him with the injury to Jarrell Quansah very late, the reaction came within seconds, and was very euphoric, and very positive and he was emotional about it, which shows me that he really means it,” the manager revealed.

The German coach has been impressed by White’s conduct since arriving at the England camp. “The way he behaves and has trained in camp has been very good and shows his quality,” Tuchel added, describing his performances in training as “exceptional.” Looking ahead to Friday’s friendly against Uruguay at Wembley, Tuchel made a direct appeal to supporters regarding their reception of the returning defender.

“Support, because he plays for England and we play in a positive moment,” the manager urged when asked what reaction he hoped for from the crowd. Tuchel acknowledged that opinions on White’s recall remain divided among the fanbase. “I can imagine there are some strong opinions out there,” he conceded. “People have to trust me that he behaves very, very well. He was positive about coming back and was desperate for many months to come back.” The manager concluded by asking spectators to reserve judgement on the Arsenal man.

“Hopefully people give him a fair chance,” Tuchel said.

The return of White may stir mixed sentiments within the England fanbase, yet it highlights how the threads of football intertwine with complexity of personal stories lurking behind the scenes. What awaits this time around could reveal much about both the player and the ongoing evolving narrative of the national team.
