Thomas Tuchel extends England contract until 2028
Thomas Tuchel has admitted to falling in love with the England job, having signed a new contract that will run until the end of the European Championships in 2028, reports BritPanorama.
The German coach, who took charge in January 2025, has now been secured for an additional two years following a successful start. Under Tuchel’s leadership, England has won nine of their ten matches, with the only defeat coming in a 3-1 loss to Senegal at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, while qualifying for this summer’s World Cup.
Speaking to England Football’s official website, the 52-year-old revealed his initial hesitation regarding a longer-term commitment. “I’m very pleased. It was me in the beginning that wanted a short-term contract only for 18 months because I was not sure what’s coming in international football,” he said.
However, Tuchel’s growing affection for the role played a significant role in his decision to extend his tenure. “Very soon, I fell in love with the job and the role… it’s just a pleasure to extend and try to complete the full cycle of two tournaments,” he noted.
Tuchel’s backroom staff have also agreed to new deals, contributing to a strong sense of cohesion within the team. “Yes, and we’re very grateful for that… we are very aligned in the way that we wanted and that feels very, very good for us as a staff,” Tuchel remarked. He expressed his confidence in their shared vision of competing for titles in major tournaments.
Reflecting on his adjustment to the role, Tuchel acknowledged the necessity of being cautious in his early days but now feels well-equipped to foster a more adventurous playing style. “This decision now gives us clarity – clarity is always important for players, for staff and for the federation and of course, for the fans,” he explained.
England will next face Uruguay on March 27, followed by a match against Japan four days later, as Tuchel aims to solidify the team’s position leading into the competitive phase of international football.
In a landscape where expectations consistently rise, Tuchel’s journey as England manager continues to evolve, encapsulating both the ideals of success and the pressures that accompany them. It’s a vivid reminder of the intricate dance between ambition and expectation at the highest levels of sport.
