Thomas Tuchel optimistic about England's World Cup group draw despite Croatia challenge

England faces tough draw at World Cup 2026

Thomas Tuchel expects his England players to “arrive with hunger” at next summer’s World Cup finals despite landing a group with 2018 finalists Croatia, reports BritPanorama.

The German manager witnessed the group draw in Washington DC, where England was placed in Group L alongside Croatia, who finished third at the 2022 finals in Qatar, as well as Panama and Ghana.

England’s first match will be against Croatia in either Toronto or Dallas on June 17, followed by a fixture against Ghana in Boston or Toronto on June 23, and finally, a clash with Panama in New York/New Jersey or Philadelphia on June 27. The venues and match timings are yet to be finalized as Tuchel begins preparations for the finals.

While he had considered the University of Kansas as a potential base, this option now appears unlikely, with a move towards a more eastern location looking probable. Tuchel has emphasized focusing on upcoming matches after a flawless qualification campaign.

He outlined the importance of mindset ahead of the tournament, stating: “I think it’s most important that you arrive with hunger and with excitement and we arrive as a team and we don’t worry about our opponents, we don’t worry about what can happen in the other group.” He further noted the positive energy cultivated during previous camps as essential for their success.

Reflecting on Croatia’s significant recent history in international tournaments, Tuchel acknowledged the challenge they pose. “Of course, (Croatia) are difficult,” he added. The Croatia team, known for their pride and talent, will undoubtedly present a formidable opening match for England.

If England succeeds in topping their group, they would likely face Mexico in Mexico City in the last 16, followed by a potential quarter-final match against Brazil, should both sides progress. Tuchel noted the competitive nature of the World Cup, commenting, “whoever wins the medal in New Jersey, they will absolutely deserve it at the toughest tournament.”

Captain Harry Kane also shared his excitement about the challenges ahead, emphasising that winning the tournament is the ultimate goal, while acknowledging the difficulty of facing Croatia. “They’ve always been even games and we’ve come out on top in a couple of them,” Kane remarked, highlighting the tight contests between the two sides in recent encounters.

With the tournament final draw now complete, England must adapt quickly, as Tuchel remarked that initial plans for their base camp have changed. “As soon as we know the schedule and the venues on Saturday, we will get our head around it and make some decisions,” he said.

As the tournament approaches, the stakes become increasingly high, promising a challenging yet thrilling road ahead for England in their pursuit of World Cup glory.
