Ben White’s England return overshadowed by crowd reaction
Ben White made his first England appearance in four years on Friday evening, entering the Uruguay friendly as Thomas Tuchel’s eighth and final substitute at Wembley, reports BritPanorama.
The Arsenal defender’s comeback was marred by a mixed reception from the home crowd, with some sections booing him as he took to the pitch. Many fans felt he had “let his country down” after his controversial exit from the 2022 World Cup, which contributed to the tense atmosphere.
Despite the unfriendly welcome, the 28-year-old scored for England, marking his first international goal by poking the ball home to give the Three Lions the lead. However, the goal was met with further boos from some supporters.
Tuchel expressed disappointment at the crowd’s treatment of White. He acknowledged the mixed reception but suggested that the defender must “take it on the chin” and work on building positive memories with the national team. The England manager stated, “He was excellent in camp, and he deserved to come on.”
To further complicate matters for the England fans, White conceded a penalty deep into stoppage time following a challenge on Federico Vinas. The referee, Sven Jablonski, awarded the spot-kick after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor. Federico Valverde successfully converted, ensuring the match concluded in a chaotic 1-1 stalemate.
The fixture raised fitness concerns for England ahead of their friendly against Japan on Tuesday. Phil Foden had to leave the field in the second half due to an injury from a challenge by Ronald Araujo, while Noni Madueke was also spotted leaving Wembley in a knee brace after a first-half incident.
Tuchel criticized referee Jablonski for what he described as a “bad day at the office,” noting that the officiating was inconsistent throughout the match. “I was surprised VAR is in place because I thought it’s not working,” he remarked, highlighting frustration over the lack of checks on earlier incidents that involved his players.
