Thomas Tuchel considers six unexpected Premier League players for England's World Cup squad

As World Cup nears, Tuchel considers England squad

With 100 days until England’s World Cup opener against Croatia, Thomas Tuchel will be thinking long and hard about which players will make the cut, reports BritPanorama.

The tournament, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the largest in World Cup history. Yet, amid the expanded format and global spectacle, the focus at home remains the same: can England translate a generation of outstanding talent into the nation’s first major trophy since 1966?

Now led by Tuchel, the pressure to get it right is higher than ever. Key names such as captain Harry Kane, starlet Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice remain central to England’s hopes, with Tuchel likely urging them to prepare their passports and boarding passes. The question that lingers is who else should make the cut?

Elliot Anderson has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most statistically dominant midfielders this season. Transitioning into a complete box-to-box playmaker, he excels in defensive stability and offensive progression, crucial attributes for the England side. Anderson ranks highly in ground duels and ball recoveries, and after a successful UEFA U21 EURO in 2025, he was fast-tracked into the senior squad, earning Man of the Match on his debut. The expectation is that he will be on the plane to the World Cup.

On the other end of the Premier League table, Morgan Rogers is establishing himself as a premier attacking playmaker, currently driving Aston Villa’s challenge for a top-four finish. Leading his team in both goals and assists, Rogers has created significant scoring opportunities, and under Tuchel, he is likely to occupy the number 10 role, potentially ahead of more renowned names like Jude Bellingham.

Another option is Eberechi Eze, who after a £67.5 million move to Arsenal, has become one of the league’s most prolific dribblers. Scoring key goals in qualifiers, Eze’s ability to shine under pressure is a trait Tuchel must value as he finalizes his squad. The attacking midfielder has recently netted six Premier League goals, further solidifying his position within the national team.

Despite a reservoir of talent on the right flank, Jared Bowen has consistently featured in Tuchel’s squads. Competing with Saka and others, Bowen is currently a joint-second highest-scoring Englishman in the Premier League, noted for his versatility which could prove pivotal in the tournament.

Lastly, Ollie Watkins, once a clear choice for the squad, faces scrutiny due to inconsistent form. Despite a career-best last season, his current goal tally raises questions about his position, although the lack of a second striker behind Kane may keep him in contention.

As England prepares to embark on this significant journey, the blend of established stars and promising newcomers encapsulates the anticipation of a nation longing for footballing success. With Tuchel’s assessment pivotal, clarity, and depth in squad selection remain imperative.

The road to glory is never straightforward, reminding us all that in football, as in life, the unexpected can often prove decisive.
