Stolen teddy baldock statue leaves family heartbroken

A bronze statue commemorating British boxing legend Teddy Baldock has been stolen from Langdon Park in Poplar, east London, leaving his family devastated, reports BritPanorama.

The theft was discovered by Martin Sax, 56, Baldock’s grandson, who learned of the incident through social media on Sunday night. A local friend confirmed that the memorial had been forcibly removed from its base.

The Metropolitan Police have stated that they received reports of the theft on Sunday and have since initiated an investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made.

Mr. Sax expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the statue, which he helped commission in 2014 to honour his grandfather’s remarkable achievements in boxing. “I’m gutted that it’s happened,” he remarked. “Time is of the essence, but if I can get out in the media, then there’s a chance it could get recovered.”

Teddy Baldock remains celebrated as Britain’s youngest world boxing champion, having won the bantamweight title at just 19 in 1927, defeating American boxer Archie Bell. His early career was marked by notable fights, including two at Madison Square Garden.

In his statements, Mr. Sax highlighted the motivations behind the theft, suggesting it may be linked to a criminal group specializing in stealing statues for their scrap value. “They don’t give a f*** really about British sporting heroes. It’s just a lump of metal to them,” he reflected.

The statue, crafted from bronze, could fetch up to £3,900 per tonne in the current market. Mr. Sax recounted hearing about his grandfather’s legacy and the significance of the statue, stating, “It’s a bit hard to put into words really… it’s been a life mission to get him recognised and to get that ripped away.” The emotional toll of the theft is palpable as the family seeks to recover a piece of their heritage.

The Metropolitan Police have urged anyone with information regarding the theft to contact them, emphasizing their commitment to follow every possible lead. “If you have any information please contact 101 quoting CAD 6133/1Feb. To remain anonymous, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111,” a police statement noted.

In the realm of sport, the theft of this statue serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of legacy and memory, particularly as tribute to those who have shaped British boxing history. The ongoing efforts to recover it reflect not only a personal loss but also a broader cultural commitment to preserving sporting heritage.
