Sky Sports interns face consequences for on-air celebration of Inter Milan's late goal

Sky Sports interns punished for celebrating goal on live television

Two Sky Sports Italy interns have reportedly faced consequences after being filmed celebrating a last-minute goal during a live broadcast, a moment that has since gone viral across social media, reports BritPanorama.

The interns, part of the team behind Sky Sport 24, were caught on camera exuberantly embracing each other following a dramatic 2–1 victory for Inter Milan over Hellas Verona on Sunday evening.

As the match entered stoppage time, a deflected own goal from Martin Frese secured the win, prompting the young employees to jump from their seats in visible delight. Their display of enthusiasm occurred behind the studio presenter, who maintained composure while delivering live updates from the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.

Despite their brief attempt to regain professionalism, the incident drew attention from both viewers and Sky Sport management. According to reports in Italy, Sky Sport Italy director Federico Ferri reacted swiftly upon witnessing the footage.

Veteran journalist Francesco Ordine shared the clip on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “The Director of Sky Sport, Federico Ferri, intervened promptly by sending the two ultra interns home and signing a very tough internal circular on the extremely delicate matter.” An internal letter reportedly circulated among editorial staff condemned the interns’ behaviour and emphasized the network’s commitment to journalistic neutrality.

The letter, described as a response to the incident, stated: “Dear colleagues, today the editorial staff was the protagonist of a scene unworthy of our profession and of the prestige and seriousness that distinguish and should distinguish Sky Sport.” It further reminded employees to behave as “journalists, not fans,” emphasizing that celebrating a goal on air is unacceptable.

While the reaction within Sky has been firm, public opinion appears more lenient. Many football fans have expressed sympathy for the interns, suggesting their excitement is an authentic reflection of passion for the sport. One comment noted: “It happens to everyone… we’re fans, there’s passion.” Another added: “Is it forbidden to cheer for your own team?”

This incident highlights the tension between professionalism and personal enthusiasm in sports broadcasting, raising questions on where the line should be drawn in such emotionally charged environments. As broadcasters navigate these dynamics, the incident serves as a reminder of how easily passion can spill into the professional realm.
