Sir Jim Ratcliffe faces backlash over immigration comments

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is facing significant criticism following his remarks about immigration in the UK, which he described as a process of ‘colonisation’. The billionaire investor, who recently acquired a minority stake in Manchester United, made these comments in an interview with Sky News, reports BritPanorama.

During the discussion, Ratcliffe stated, “You can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in.” He further claimed, “The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn’t it? I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it’s 70 million. That’s 12 million people.”

The backlash was swift, with thousands of Manchester United fans expressing their outrage on social media. In response to the controversy, the club issued a statement, and Ratcliffe offered an apology that focused more on his choice of words than on the implications of his statements. “I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth,” he said.

Ratcliffe clarified that his comments were made while addressing UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, discussing the importance of economic growth and job creation. He added, “My intention was to stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone. It is critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK.”

Since acquiring a minority stake in Manchester United in February 2024, Ratcliffe has been a contentious figure. His role has already seen significant layoffs among staff, and the club struggles to maintain competitiveness in football. Reports suggest that the majority owners, the Glazer family, were ‘horrified’ by Ratcliffe’s comments, considering their own immigrant history and support for inclusivity within the club.

With the team’s financial performance reportedly faltering, sponsorships have dwindled, and the club is currently without a training kit partner. Insiders indicate that Ratcliffe’s remarks could further complicate efforts to secure funding for the planned new stadium, with local leaders including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham voicing their disapproval. One insider warned, “Real harm could be done.”

Discussions over the future of Ratcliffe at United remain uncertain. The Glazers retain authority, capable of accepting third-party offers that could push Ratcliffe out. Whether he can mend relations with stakeholders following this incident is a narrative that will unfold in the months ahead.

In a sport that often blurs lines between business and public sentiment, Ratcliffe’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with prominence, reflecting how even the richest figures can find themselves navigating treacherous waters.
