Simon Jordan's warning on Eddie Hearn's boxing future proves accurate with Saudi influence rising

Saudi Arabia’s emergence reshapes boxing landscape

Simon Jordan’s prescient warning to Eddie Hearn during a talkSPORT broadcast in September 2024 has proven remarkably accurate, as Saudi Arabia’s influence in boxing is transforming the promotional landscape, reports BritPanorama.

The launch of Zuffa Boxing, a Saudi-backed promotional venture spearheaded by Dana White, marks a significant shift. This initiative aims to dominate the sport and has already led to key departures from established promotions.

In a notable development, Conor Benn has left Matchroom to join Zuffa, signing a lucrative contract worth £11.1 million for a fight against former super lightweight champion Regis Prograis on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s clash with Arslanbek Makhmudov on 11 April. Benn’s exit represents one of the most significant defections in promotional history, further indicating the growing allure of Saudi-backed initiatives.

Jordan expressed concerns over the viability of traditional promoters, stating, “It does make me wonder if the end game for the Saudis is to say, ‘What do we need these guys for? They are glorified agents; we can own the fighters.'” His remarks reflect a belief that the financial might of the Saudi-backed promotion could render established figures obsolete.

In contrast to Hearn, Frank Warren has taken a much more combative stance. He has filed a lawsuit seeking $1 billion in damages against Zuffa’s associated companies, alleging breaches of contractual agreements during the establishment of the new boxing entity. Warren insists that Queensberry secured exclusive rights to offer boxing services via a partnership with Sela in September 2023, making the recent developments particularly contentious.

A spokesperson for Sela has dismissed Warren’s claims as unfounded, expressing confidence in a resolution that would vindicate their position. This back-and-forth indicates a significant rift in the boxing community, ushering in a new era dominated by Saudi interests.

The evolving dynamics in boxing serve as a stark reminder of the volatility in sports management, where financial power can swiftly alter allegiances and reshape established hierarchies. Jordan’s prophecy is playing out, illustrating not just the allure of wealth but how it can fundamentally alter the fabric of competition. As this saga unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that the traditional promotional landscape is under intense pressure, with the potential for rapid transformation looming over the sport.
