Severe weather forces 16 English Football League matches to be postponed

Freezing temperatures disrupt English football

Freezing temperatures have wreaked havoc across English football today, forcing the cancellation of 16 EFL games across the weekend, including every scheduled 3pm League Two fixture, reports BritPanorama.

The cold snap, with temperatures possibly dropping to as low as -10C in parts of the country, has rendered pitches unplayable despite groundstaff efforts throughout the weekend.

Cambridge versus Grimsby became the final League Two match to fall victim to the freeze, with the decision made at midday. Championship and League One fixtures have also been affected, with multiple games called off following morning pitch inspections that deemed surfaces unsafe for play.

The disruption follows four National League postponements yesterday. Sheffield United’s home clash with Oxford United was the first Championship fixture to be postponed, with the referee ruling parts of Bramall Lane’s pitch frozen. This led to confusion amongst supporters, many of whom questioned whether undersoil heating had been activated.

Portsmouth’s meeting with Ipswich Town was also cancelled after an 11am inspection at Fratton Park. In League One, Doncaster’s fixture against Luton, Port Vale versus Barnsley, and Rotherham’s game with Mansfield all fell victim to the frozen surfaces, despite clubs using frost sheeting and lighting rigs throughout the week.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice covering Greater Manchester on Sunday. However, Premier League fixtures are expected to proceed as planned, with Manchester City’s clash against Chelsea unaffected by the adverse conditions.

Supporters travelling to matches across the region may encounter difficulties, with train services and road networks potentially disrupted by the wintry weather. Some areas could see up to 40 centimetres of snow as the cold front lingers across Britain. Meanwhile, Plymouth Argyle confirmed their League One encounter with Burton Albion would go ahead, although fans were advised to exercise caution around the stadium.

Saturday’s National League fixture between Morecambe and Altrincham was abandoned just six minutes before the scheduled start, with officials citing safety concerns during the pre-match warm-up.

The impact of extreme weather conditions on matchday operations raises ongoing questions about the preparedness of clubs to manage such situations, reminding all involved of the fragility of football scheduling in the face of nature’s whims.
