Sean Dyche comments on declining atmospheres in English football stadiums
Sean Dyche has suggested that the fierce atmospheres once synonymous with English football stadiums have diminished considerably, reports BritPanorama.
The Nottingham Forest manager shared his perspective as his side gears up for a pivotal relegation encounter against Leeds United. Dyche acknowledged Elland Road’s reputation as one of the most daunting venues in contemporary football but noted that modern supporters are notably less hostile than in previous eras.
Despite this assessment, the Forest boss indicated he welcomes the opportunity to experience the Yorkshire club’s famous ground when the two sides meet in what promises to be a crucial fixture. He remarked, “It (Elland Road) is like most grounds now. They are not as hostile as they were 30 years ago. But in terms of the modern game, it is still hostile. It’s got that real feel to it and is always a tough place to go.”
Dyche expressed appreciation for crowds with a vibrant atmosphere, stating, “I like crowds like that and atmospheres like that. It’s got a massive history and a massive fan base. It will be tough but there is a good edge to what we are doing at the moment, a good competitive edge.” Both clubs find themselves in identical positions in the table, each having accumulated 26 points this season.
That tally leaves Forest and Leeds sitting six points above the relegation places, making Friday night’s encounter a genuine six-pointer with significant implications for both sides’ survival hopes. Victory for either team would provide substantial breathing room in their battle to avoid the drop, while defeat could see the losing side dragged closer to the bottom three.
Leeds’ home ground has earned a formidable reputation in the modern game, with visiting teams often finding the atmosphere particularly challenging to navigate. Dyche confirmed he will assess the condition of goalkeeper Matz Sels, who is nursing a thigh problem, ahead of the trip to Yorkshire.
Winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is also a doubt after sustaining a shoulder injury during last weekend’s 1-1 stalemate with Crystal Palace. The absence of Neco Williams through suspension opens the door for January arrival Luca Netz to potentially feature at left-back. The German defender, who joined on deadline day, could be handed his first appearance for the club, although Dyche gave no indication that the new signing would be included in his starting lineup. Speaking on the signing, Dyche added, “He’s a young, up-and-coming player. He’s one of a number of players brought here for what comes next. That doesn’t mean he is unable to play now, but there is a future thinking behind it.”
