Scottie Scheffler secures PGA Tour season opener victory, reaching 20 career titles

Scottie Scheffler wins The American Express

Scottie Scheffler has opened the new PGA Tour season with a victory, securing a commanding four-stroke triumph at The American Express in California on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.

The 29-year-old American, ranked number one globally, fired a closing 66 to finish on 27 under par in his first PGA Tour appearance of 2026. This win marks Scheffler’s 20th title on the American circuit, earning him lifetime membership on the Tour.

Beginning the final day a single shot behind overnight leader Si Woo Kim, Scheffler produced nine birdies to pull away from the field at the Pete Dye Stadium Course. His round began with a birdie followed by a dropped shot, but he soon asserted his authority with an impressive stretch of scoring.

Converting four birdies in six holes, Scheffler established a commanding lead, which reached five strokes by the time he hit the 12th hole. Further gains at the 11th, 12th, 14th, and 16th holes built his advantage. However, a double bogey at the par-three 17th, where he hit into water, slightly reduced his winning margin.

Over the past four years, the Texan has accumulated all 20 victories since his breakthrough campaign in 2022. His achievement of 20 wins and four major championships before turning 30 places him in elite company, alongside only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. “Pretty wild. It’s been a great start to my career. It’s been special,” Scheffler said. Notably, nine of those 20 wins have come by margins of four shots or greater.

England’s Harry Hall emerged as the leading British performer, securing a share of 24th position after an impressive closing 65. Australia’s Jason Day made a late charge with a superb 64 on Sunday.

The evolving narrative of Scheffler’s dominance serves as a testament to his dedicated approach and skill on the greens. As golf continues its unpredictable course, his performances remind spectators of the fine line between triumph and challenge in the game.
