Scott Carson Announces Retirement from Professional Football
Former Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, reports BritPanorama.
Carson, a notable presence in football for the last two decades, concluded his career having made 526 appearances for club and country. He ended his time on the pitch with two Champions League medals and a background that included four caps for England, notably participating in the 2006 World Cup.
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Carson remarked: “After an incredible journey between the posts, it’s time to hang up the gloves. Football has given me everything — memories, friendships, and moments I’ll never forget. Thank you to every teammate, coach, fan, and club that’s been part of my ride. It’s been an honour.”
Carson’s career began at Leeds United before making his way to Manchester City in 2004 as a backup goalkeeper during their Champions League-winning campaign. He later played for Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Aston Villa, Bursaspor, Wigan Athletic, Derby County, and Manchester City. After six seasons at the Etihad Stadium, he chose to leave this summer, transitioning from an influential backup handler to a mentor for City’s first-choice keeper, Ederson.
His impact on Ederson was acknowledged as crucial during their time together. Reflecting on their relationship, Carson stated: “When I first came in, his English wasn’t great but we used to communicate even without a conversation. I was there for him if he needed me and I hope I did help him in some way.”
Pep Guardiola praised Carson in 2022, saying, “We are delighted. He is very important to us behind the scenes. His chemistry with Ederson and Zack Steffen is fundamental in the locker room.” Following Carson’s announcement, former teammates and players across the league expressed their admiration. Erling Haaland wished him well, while Ilkay Gundogan called him a “legend.”
As Carson hangs up his boots, football reflects on a goalkeeper whose presence both on and off the pitch will be remembered. How fitting that in the world of sport, even a backup can emerge a star within his own right.
