Commentator Sam Matterface shares news of father’s passing

England football commentator Sam Matterface conveyed devastating personal news during a live broadcast, revealing that his father had passed away on Good Friday under sudden and shocking circumstances, reports BritPanorama.

On talkSPORT, alongside journalist Alex Crook, Matterface delivered an emotional two-minute address, explaining his decision to return to the airwaves just four days after his loss. He noted that his father would have made the same choice and acknowledged that it was his father who first ignited his passion for radio.

Matterface candidly stated to his audience, “I’m going to be honest and open with you right off the bat, I’m not in a particularly good place this morning and I’m going to share with you why.” He emphasized that it had been a tough weekend for him and his family due to the unexpected passing.

“So you’re going to have to bear with me a little today and indulge me a little for a minute,” he added, indicating the weight of the situation he was addressing.

The commentator fondly spoke of his father, affectionately known as “Little Pete,” who had a deep affection for talkSPORT. “Little Pete loved Alan, loved talkSPORT and loved radio,” Matterface explained, underscoring his father’s connection to the station.

He offered two reasons for his return to work so shortly after his father’s death: “One, he would have done the same, and the other reason is that it is important.” Matterface recognized that many listeners might relate to his experience, having faced grief while working through similar challenges.

As he reflected on the impact of radio in his father’s life, Matterface described it as a constant companion during his father’s work as a painter and decorator. “He introduced me to radio my dad, and as a painter and decorator, it went with him everywhere that he went,” he noted.

His father took immense pride in Matterface’s role at what he regarded as his favourite station, stating, “He loved the fact I was on talkSPORT, his favourite radio station.” He expressed a hope that radio would also serve as a source of comfort for his brother, sister, and stepmother during this difficult time.

This poignant moment serves as a reminder of the personal stories that lie behind public figures, illustrating how their lives and professions can intertwine in meaningful ways. For Matterface, radio is not just a career but a legacy that continues through the shared love of the medium his father instilled in him.
