Aryna Sabalenka commenced her 2026 season in impressive fashion, achieving a swift 6-0 6-1 victory over Cristina Bucsa at the Brisbane International on Tuesday, reports BritPanorama.

Having received a bye in the opening round, Sabalenka is set to face Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the next stage of the competition. The Belarusian stands as the defending champion in Brisbane, with eyes on gaining momentum ahead of the Australian Open commencing on January 18.
Following her victory, Sabalenka addressed the controversy stemming from her recent exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios in Dubai, where she succumbed 6-3 6-3. Despite criticism directed towards the event, she stated it successfully highlighted tennis and its potential appeal.
“It wasn’t about proving something to anyone. It was about showing that tennis can be really huge and we can bring a lot of attention to an exhibition match, which usually never happens,” Sabalenka explained, adding that the experience was enjoyable and presented a unique challenge.
Sabalenka noted that competing against Kyrgios had notably improved her physical readiness for the upcoming season, remarking on the distinctly different intensity when facing male players. “Especially when there is Nick, who is drop-shotting every other shot, you move a lot, so there was a great fitness for me,” she commented.
At 26 years old, Sabalenka is aiming to regain her top form at Melbourne Park, where she previously clinched consecutive titles in 2023 and 2024, before suffering a surprising defeat to Madison Keys in last year’s final. The Dubai contest faced backlash, with prominent figures in women’s tennis like Iga Swiatek questioning its relevance in light of the evolution of the women’s game since Billie Jean King’s famous 1973 victory over Bobby Riggs.
Despite the scrutiny, Sabalenka remains focused on her supporters, acknowledging that while criticism is inevitable, she draws strength from the encouragement she receives. “There are always going to be people who don’t like you, don’t respect you, don’t support you,” she remarked, “But there are so many people who support me who really cheer me on.”
