Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina set for Indian Wells final
Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina are set to contest the Indian Wells final on Sunday in what will be their third championship encounter in little more than four months, reports BritPanorama.
The Belarusian world number one advanced to the California showpiece following a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Linda Noskova on Friday. Rybakina defeated Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-4 to join her in the final.
This matchup marks the continuation of a competitive rivalry, with Rybakina having emerged victorious in both their previous finals this season, including the WTA Finals in November and the Australian Open in January. Rybakina leads their head-to-head record, having won four of five encounters.
Sabalenka has enjoyed a remarkable campaign in 2026, accruing 15 wins from her first 16 matches, with her only defeat occurring against Rybakina in Melbourne last month. The top seed is pursuing her maiden Indian Wells title after finishing as runner-up to Rybakina in 2023 and Mirra Andreeva the previous year.
In her semifinal, Sabalenka established early dominance against 14th seed Noskova, breaking serve to lead 3-1 and stretching the advantage to 5-1. Although the Czech interrupted her momentum by breaking back, Sabalenka’s overall performance remained strong throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, Rybakina faced a challenging first set against Svitolina but capitalized on unforced errors to seize control. Leading 5-1 in the second set, she maintained her composure to secure the match, overcoming a brief resurgence from Svitolina.
Sabalenka highlighted her determination by stating, “It feels great, I’ve lost a couple of finals here, so I’ll make sure that I’m more than ready on Sunday. I’ll bring my best tennis, and this is the year.” Rybakina responded with her own commitment to an intense battle, saying, “I’m going to fight as much as I can. Hopefully it’s going to be a great match.”
As both players gear up for this pivotal clash, the stakes have never been higher, offering a tantalizing glimpse of how sport can intertwine rivalry and aspiration. There’s a palpable energy here that promises to resonate well beyond the court on Sunday.
