Roy Keane pays tribute to mother following her death

Roy Keane has paid tribute to his mother Marie, who passed away at Marymount Hospice in Cork, reports BritPanorama.

The former Manchester United captain shared a photograph on Instagram featuring himself with Marie, who was seated in a wheelchair, both appearing smiling in the image.

His caption simply read: “You’ll always be the boss.”

Marie died surrounded by her family, with a notice confirming that she would be “sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, as well as many relatives, friends, and neighbours.”

Her husband, Maurice, known as Mossie, had died in 2019 at the age of 79 following a stroke the previous year. The Keane family maintained a close bond, with Roy frequently returning to Ireland to visit his mother.

Tributes from several of Roy Keane’s former Manchester United teammates followed his post, with David Beckham and Gary Neville responding with heart emojis, while former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane added symbols of support.

Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah and ex-footballer Anton Ferdinand also extended their condolences. Keane had been set to appear as a pundit for ITV during England’s friendly against Uruguay at Wembley on Friday evening, but withdrew following the announcement of his mother’s death. Presenter Mark Pougatch conveyed condolences to Roy and his family on behalf of ITV during the broadcast.

Rockmount AFC, the Cork schoolboy club where Keane began his footballing career, expressed their sympathies, stating: “Sincere condolences to extended Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie.”

The visitation is scheduled for Monday evening at O’Connor Bros. Funeral Home, with a requiem mass on Tuesday at the Church of the Resurrection in Farranree, followed by burial at St Catherine’s Cemetery in Kilcully, County Cork. The family has requested that donations be made to Marymount Hospice in lieu of flowers.

In a bittersweet moment, Keane’s heartfelt tribute has highlighted the enduring connections forged through sport and family, a reminder of the personal stories that often intertwine with public life.
