Roy Keane reignites feud with Michael Carrick’s wife on podcast

Roy Keane has reignited a long-dormant dispute with Michael Carrick’s wife during the latest instalment of the Stick to Football podcast, reports BritPanorama.

The former Manchester United captain, now 54, took aim at Lisa Roughead while discussing her husband’s appointment as interim boss at Old Trafford. “His wife can always come in [if Carrick doesn’t do well], cause she’s got a bit of a big mouth sometimes. She’s probably doing the team talk,” Keane remarked.

This pointed comment was made as Keane reflected on the necessity of incoming managers delivering powerful speeches to their squads. Drawing on his own experience at Sunderland, he mentioned his tactic of observing rather than addressing players for the first two days, thereby keeping them guessing.

The origins of this feud trace back to February 2014 when Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Olympiacos in the Champions League. Carrick featured in that match and subsequently faced media scrutiny, with Keane, working as a pundit, assessing, “That interview was just like the performance, flat.” Lisa responded with frustration on Twitter, calling Keane a provocateur before retracting her comments.

The matter appeared settled until Keane’s recent podcast comments revived the tension. He extended his criticism beyond Lisa, questioning the qualifications of the newly appointed coaching staff under Carrick, particularly targeting Jonny Evans’ place in the first-team setup. Keane pointedly asked, “What has Jonny Evans done to be a coach of Man United’s first team? He left the job four weeks ago—ironic, isn’t it?”

Keane’s skepticism also extended to the other appointments in Carrick’s backroom team, expressing uncertainty about the coaching credentials of both Evans and Jonathan Woodgate, while acknowledging that Steve Holland’s involvement would ensure “top class training sessions.”

Carrick secured the caretaker role after a rigorous selection process, edging out familiar names like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Reports indicate Carrick accepted that his stint might only last for six months, a pragmatic approach that reflects his awareness of the club’s dynamics.

With a past that includes five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, Carrick’s experience as a player at Old Trafford is substantial. His long-term relationship with Lisa, childhood sweethearts since their youth, adds another layer to this evolving narrative.

As Carrick prepares to face Manchester City in his first match as interim manager, the undercurrents of past grievances serve as a backdrop to the challenges ahead, underscoring how personal tensions can resurface amidst the pressures of football.
