Keane criticizes Wharton after England’s World Cup qualifying win

Roy Keane believed Adam Wharton was ‘a bit soft’ during England’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Albania on Sunday night, reports BritPanorama.

The Three Lions secured all three points with a late brace from Harry Kane, who now boasts 78 international goals. This victory adds to England’s growing confidence in their qualifying campaign.

Manager Thomas Tuchel opted for seven changes from the team that defeated Serbia 2-0 earlier in the week, giving Wharton his first start for the national team in just his third international match.

Despite the win, Keane expressed his disappointment with Wharton’s first-half performance on ITV, noting the player’s tendency to take a less assertive approach. “A lot of the modern midfielders, their first option seems to be ‘can I go sideways or backwards?’” he remarked, acknowledging, however, that he is a fan of the young midfielder.

While Keane provided a critical assessment, Tuchel defended Wharton, stating, “Good, good,” after the match and emphasizing the need for the player to grow into his role. He praised Wharton’s forward-thinking play but suggested that he could be more vocal and demand the ball from teammates.

Tuchel provided specific insights on Wharton’s position during the game, stating, “In the second half, we reversed a little bit and played a 4-3-3 so he was alone, sometimes a little exposed. It’s not his fault. We were a bit open and a bit sloppy. But overall, he did well.”

In related developments, Jude Bellingham reacted strongly after being substituted, a move attributed to concerns over his yellow card and potential suspension ahead of next year’s World Cup. Tuchel has indicated he will address Bellingham’s behavior as part of maintaining a cohesive team environment.

This match highlighted the balancing act in managing emerging talents while preparing for the rigors of international competition — a continuing conversation as England eyes success in the upcoming World Cup.
