Rory McIlroy withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational

Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to a back injury sustained while preparing for his third round at Bay Hill, reports BritPanorama.

The Northern Irishman withdrew approximately half an hour before his scheduled 17:55 GMT tee time on Saturday, having experienced problems during his warm-up session. McIlroy had been practising on the range alongside New Zealand’s Ryan Fox when the issue arose.

Currently ranked world number two, McIlroy was well-positioned at four-under par heading into the weekend before being forced to abandon his challenge. This withdrawal marks McIlroy’s first from a tournament in thirteen years, the last being at the 2013 Honda Classic due to toothache.

According to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, the five-time major champion tweaked something in his lower back while working out in the gym prior to heading to the practice range. The 36-year-old arrived at Bay Hill to prepare for his round but spent only a brief period hitting balls before making the decision to pull out.

Despite this setback, McIlroy reassured golf journalist Adam Schupak, giving a thumbs-up and stating he was “all good”. He had opened the tournament with a level-par 72 on Thursday before finding his rhythm with a four-under 68 in Friday’s performance, which featured five birdies, including an impressive run on the back nine.

He sat nine strokes behind leader Daniel Berger, who was at thirteen-under par at the time of McIlroy’s withdrawal. The decision seems to be a precautionary measure ahead of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass next week, where McIlroy will defend his title from the previous year.

Beyond the Players Championship, attention will soon shift to Augusta National, where McIlroy is expected to return next month as the defending champion, having secured the career Grand Slam with his Masters triumph over Justin Rose in a playoff.

In an evolving sport where injuries can shift the balance dramatically, McIlroy’s decision highlights the delicate interplay between health and performance. The anticipation for his return to form remains high, as fans and commentators alike will be keen to see how he navigates the challenges ahead.
