Rory McIlroy has today revealed his selections for the prestigious Masters Champions Dinner, exercising his privilege as the tournament’s reigning champion to curate the menu, reports BritPanorama.

The Northern Irish golfer announced his choices on Wednesday, with the dinner scheduled for 7 April – giving past champions just 48 hours to digest before The Masters gets underway at Augusta National.

As is tradition, the defending champion takes responsibility for choosing what fellow green jacket holders will eat at the annual gathering. McIlroy has opted for an eclectic mix of dishes that blend his Irish heritage with more adventurous culinary choices, including some unexpected game meat.

The starter selection features four distinct appetizers, headlined by grilled elk sliders alongside rock shrimp tempura and bacon-wrapped dates. The latter dish carries particular sentimental value, having been inspired by a family recipe from McIlroy’s mother. “Thanks to Rosie for that one,” McIlroy said when discussing the bacon-wrapped dates.

The golfer explained his reasoning for featuring elk among the opening courses rather than as the centrepiece of the meal. He had consumed significant quantities of the game meat during his preparation for last year’s tournament victory. “I got this big shipment of elk, and I was eating a lot of that,” McIlroy revealed about his pre-Masters diet in 2025.

Following the appetizers, guests will be served Yellowfin tuna carpaccio accompanied by foie gras and chives as a starter course. For the main event, diners can choose between Wagyu Filet Mignon or Seared Salmon. The protein will arrive alongside Brussels sprouts, carrots and onion rings, with Traditional Irish Champ completing the plate.

This classic Irish side dish typically combines mashed potatoes with scallions, milk and butter – a nod to McIlroy’s roots in County Down. The inclusion of champ ensures his homeland’s culinary traditions feature prominently at the Augusta gathering, where past champions from across the globe will sample the Northern Irishman’s carefully considered selections.

McIlroy acknowledged that not all past champions might share his enthusiasm for game meat, prompting his decision to feature elk as a starter rather than the main attraction. “I didn’t want elk to be the main course, because I didn’t know if everyone would like that, so I incorporated it into the appetizers,” he explained.

To conclude the evening, the defending champion has selected sticky toffee pudding served with vanilla ice cream and warm toffee sauce. The menu announcement prompted mixed reactions online, with opinions sharply divided among golf fans. “These menus are always horrific,” one social media user complained, while another offered a contrasting view: “Standing ovation. That’s an elite menu.”

As players and fans await The Masters, McIlroy’s culinary choices might spark both intrigue and debate, reminding everyone that even at the highest levels of sport, personal touches and tradition play a significant role in the game’s enduring appeal.
