Rory McIlroy’s daughter Poppy shows growing passion for golf
Rory McIlroy has revealed that his daughter’s enthusiasm for golf has significantly increased over the past year, stating that Poppy’s budding passion stems from her memorable appearance at last year’s Par 3 contest at Augusta National, reports BritPanorama.
The five-year-old’s commitment to golf was evident as she insisted on bringing her own equipment to the event this year. McIlroy shared, “I really love that she started to get into the game a lot more, and it all stemmed from the putt last year at the Par 3.” He added, “She made sure that I brought her putter up this year so that she could hit the putt with her putter, and not mine.”
Poppy returns to Augusta National for this year’s Par 3 contest, which precedes the 90th Masters that begins on Thursday. Her previous appearance garnered extensive attention on social media after she successfully sank a remarkable 25-foot putt.
McIlroy will arrive at Augusta as the defending champion, following his victory last year that solidified his status as only the sixth player in golfing history to win all four major titles. He is considered one of the frontrunners for back-to-back green jackets, alongside competitors such as Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Bryson DeChambeau.
The putt from last year’s contest showcased Poppy’s natural ability, leaving McIlroy’s playing partners, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood, highly impressed. However, the sudden spotlight proved overwhelming for Poppy, leading her to retreat from public attention following her viral moment.
McIlroy has praised his daughter as “the most unbelievably polite, respectful and well-behaved little girl.” Despite her initial shyness after gaining widespread attention, Poppy’s confidence has grown remarkably, as indicated by her eagerness to participate in this year’s event.
Reflecting on his journey as a father, McIlroy spoke fondly of watching Poppy develop, describing her as “a mini Erica,” referencing her mother. He noted the unique opportunities his career affords them, emphasizing, “to see her grow up, and to have her travel the world, to see different places to give her a life that I could only dream about when I was that age.”
As the Masters commences, the anticipation surrounding both McIlroy’s performance and Poppy’s golfing journey serves as a reminder of the familial ties and personal stories that weave through the fabric of professional sport.
